What is Mission Trip New York City?

76 High School students and 15 adults are getting reday to depart for New York City. In the course of 10 days, this mission group will share Jesus Christ with kids in Harlem and throughout the various neighborhoods of Brooklyn. Teams of 12-25 will be leading Vacation Bible School at the following complexes: Martin Luther King Towers, James Weldon Johnson Houses, DeHostos Community Center and Robert A. Taft Houses.

Each housing project varies in size from 6-10 buildings, 9-19 stories high. We are likely to engage with 300 kids during our afternoons in Harlem. Following VBS week, we will help turn East Harlem into a State Fair, with food, games and rides, artwork, giveaways/drawings, bands, petting zoo and old fashion fun! Who better to host a Fair than 91 Midwesterners? We pray that the relationships we build with the children will create bridges between the rest of the community as they celebrate at State Fair Comes to Harlem!

In preparation for NYC, 60 of our 91 participated in Bethlehem's VBS, Power Lab: Discovering Jesus' Miraculous Power. Now we are taking Power Lab on the road! In addition to the 4 VBS sites, 1 team will be stationed at Red Hook Pentecostal Holiness Church in Brooklyn. There they will be painting and helping to restore a much utilized church in the heart of Red Hook Houses.

We will be housed at 4 different churches throughout Brooklyn, Sunset Park Community Church, New Baptist Temple, Red Hook Pentecostal and Trinity Lutheran. In exchange for the hospitality and a safe place to rest, we will also be doing small projects at each church.

In between our ministry and outreach, we will take in the sights of the Big Apple: Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Ground Zero Tour, Central Park, China Town, Times Square, Broadway and a Mets' game.

We are blessed to be traveling across country and blessed to share our blessings with others. There is much in store for us - from the floors of churches to the platforms of the subway, fromt he familiarity of each other to the new and unknown people we will meet, fromt he cornerstone of our Christian faith to the intersection of cultures and other world faiths, from Minneapolis to New York City - God awaits to both guide us and greet us!

Please keep us in your prayers as we share the love of Jesus Christ with New York City! Also pray for those we will meet and work with, especially for the leadership at Harlem Housing and for our guides through Mission New York City, Incorporated.
