The true focus of our Christian life is also our greatest challenge – being more Christ-like in our daily living. And being a good steward goes hand in hand with that Christian life. The stewardship lifestyle includes not only time, talents and treasures, but also tending to our relationships, health and taking care of our environment. It’s a deliberate decision, made everyday and a lifelong journey to become like Jesus.
Believing — knowing — that “all is God’s” doesn’t provide us with a clear plan of action. Nevertheless, most of us understand the idea of being a steward when it comes to some earthly matters. You become a good steward of the earth’s resources when you recycle your newspapers, use low-energy light bulbs or fuel efficient cars. But you are also a good steward when you look after your children and family, when you extend help to neighbors or friends in need and even when you look after your own health needs.
And yes, stewardship also involves how you use your money. Money, especially from employment, is a reflection of our God-given talents. Whether you have a strict budget or not, the way you spend your money is a reflection of the things you value. If you want your spending habits to reflect your Christian life, begin by being thankful for what you do have, and then consider the ways in which you can truly honor God. When we have a joyful, healthy spiritual relationship with God, giving becomes one obvious way to express that connection. Use that connection to make decisions about the things that are truly important.
