Bridging the Partisan Divide

When the 35W bridge collapsed, we saw for a brief moment the end of partisanship. Politicians on both sides of the aisle stood together and pledged to work together to solve Minnesota's transportation problems. In about two weeks time, partisanship began to rear its ugly head and the joint efforts quickly turned into partisan rhetoric from both political parties. How can we as Christians use our faith to help bridge the partisan divide that envelopes our secular government? We will explore this issue in the coming weeks.

SEPTEMBER 10 -Bethlehem member and former Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Russell Anderson and Former Republican Governor Al Quie (a lifelong Lutheran) have been working for some time to stop and/or remove the growing partisanship in judicial elections in Minnesota. Join them to hear about what they have been doing to remove partisan politics (and religion) from the judicial branch of government.

SEPTEMBER 17 - Representative Paul Thissen (D- Minneapolis) will talk about how we can get past partisanship to solve the long range problems that challenge our communities in Minnesota.

SEPTEMBER 24 - Kris Sanda,  Metropolitan Council Member.  Ms. Sanda has actually bridged the partisan divide, having served in appointed positions for each of the last 5 Minnesota governors.  A lifelong Lutheran and past chair of the Lutheran Social Services of Minnesota Foundation, she will share her perspective about how you get past partisanship to do the people's work and a little about how her Lutheran faith helped her in that process.

OCTOBER 1 - Gary Simpson, Luther Seminary.  Pastor Simpson will talk on the subject: The Ethics of Civility, Civil Society, and the Partisan Divide."  When he was a working pastor in Portland, Oregon, he chaired the Governor's Task Force on Combating Hunger--a successful and partisan-bridging effort that made a real difference in the lives of tens of thousands of Oregonians at the time.

OCTOBER 8 - Senator Geoff Michel (R- Edina) will talk about how we can get past partisanship to solve the long range problems that challenge our communities in Minnesota.

The series will continue throughout October with additional speakers, including representatives from Luther Seminary to help us understand our role as people of faith in working to overcome partisanship  to help solve the many public policy challenges we face in Minnesota and in the United States.
