Service Activity

Confirmation Service Projects

Each student needs to complete a minimum of 6 service projects for Confirmation. (This works out to 3 per year.)

These projects can be done

  • with the large confirmation group
  • within the small confirmation group
  • within families
We encourage parents, mentors and other interested adults to participate. Drivers are always needed!

Large Group Opportunities:

What: Donation Drive
When: October 1- 22, 2008
Description: Collect toiletry items from your neighbors for Youthlinks to help homeless youth. Sort and deliver items to the shelter and have a tour. 

Small Group Opprotunities:

Some areas your small group can make a differences can be set up:

Children - Prepare & serve lunch at the Crisis Nursery, Saturday Sunday School at Marie Sanvick Center, Saturday Kids Club in North Minneapolis

Homelessness - prepare, serve & share a meal at a homeless shelter

Elderly - nursing home visit, deliver Easter baskets to homebound BLC members, yard work

Poverty - sort donations at variety of sites (On Call Ministry, ARC, Goodwill, LSS, etc)

Hunger - food shelf work (30 Hour Famine weekend)

FEBRUARY 8-9, 2008

Amazing youth raised $7586.31 for 30 Hour Famine. Prizes should be arriving in May!

Thank you to the 7th-12th grade youth who participated in the 30 hour famine. Senior and Junior High Youth

  • Fed 32 kids for a year at Feed My Starving Children by filling 54 boxes with 11,664 meals
  • 200 sandwiches were distributed to individuals
  • 11 blankets were made and distributed
  • 350 families received Cheerios packed at Second Harvest Food Share
  • Food shelves were restocked at Community Emergency Services
  • 200 sandwiches and 45 bag lunches were prepared for Simpson House Shelter
  • 200 sandwiches and 45 bag lunches were prepared for St. Stephen's Men's Shelter

Ministry Opportunities

Each student needs to do ministry INSIDE Bethlehem.Sign Up Here!

Acolyte/Crucifer - Provide up front leadership assistance by lighting the candles, carrying the processional cross on festival Sundays, assisting with communion distribution, and sometimes providing support during Baptism. One service a month at any of these worship times - 8, 9, 10:15, 11:30am & 7pm.  

Youth Band - 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month, 6:30-8:00pm. Learn about leading worship and performing music as a band.  

Youth Choir -  Jr. & Sr. High students grow musically through a variety of styles with and without instruments. Wednesday, 5:15-6:05pm, September-May. Youth choir sings one Sunday/month at 10:15 & 11:30am worship services.  

Sound Tech - Operate the sound system, including audio & video recordings, during worship services.   

Property Helper - Assist with property maintenace of the church grounds on a short-term basis, such as raking leaves or shoveling snow.  

Usher - An usher is a representative of the congregations & often the first person to meet & greet members & visitors to worship. Hand out bulletins, assist with offering, and greet people with a smile. 

Reading Lessons - A different reader is scheduled for each of the five Sunday worship services. Choose a service your prefer to read at and follow a schedule on a regular basis. A copy of the lesson for the day is mailed to each reader the week of his/her assigned Sunday.

Communion Assistant - Participate in the service of Holy Communion by assisting the presiding pastor in serving the bread and wine. Communion is served the first & third Sunday of each month for 8,9,10:15 worship. It is served weekly at the 11:30am & 7pm worship. In addition, special Holy Days such as Christmas, Ash Wednesday, & Easter need communion assistants. Choose a service time you prefer and follow a schedule on a regular basis.

Greeter/Hospitality - Serve on a team in a once a month rotation to welcome people as they come to worship. Individuals may choose to help at the Welcome Center by assisting people with directions or answering questions.

Nursery Assistant - The nursery offers a safe, clean, and loving environment for children age 3 months through 3 years old.

Early Childhood Sunday Helper - Help with 2-year-old Sunday School in a self-contained classroom where they learn Bible stories through a variety of learning stations. Assist with children age 2 thorugh Kindergarten in large and small group activities such as music, puppets, storytelling, crafts & games.

Elementary Sunday School Helper -  Sunday School for grades 1-6
One-on-One Assistant - accompany a Sunday School student who need extra support.

Workshop Assistant - assist the workshop leader with teaching a class. Not every workshop is taught ever session. The most common workshops are:

  • Art - help prepare supplies, assist children & help with clean-up
  • Cinema - serve popcorn, help with clean-up
  • Computer Lab - assist younger children
  • Cooking - help prepare ingredients, assist children & help with clean-up
  • Drama & Storytelling - be an actor
  • Games - help lead games
  • Make-a-Movie - work with workshop leader to create a video with the kids
  • Puppetry - assist workshop leader as needed
  • Science - help prepare supplies, assist children and help with clean-up

Power Point Technician - run power point during opening music. Create new slides if needed.

VBS - Each June, children age 4 to 6th grade participate in a fun-filled week of Bible lessons and activity from 9 am to noon during Vacation Bible School. Volunteer to be a helper in a variety of creative, multi-sensory activities such as song-leading, games, drama, snacks or be a crew leader.

Movie-Maker - Create videos for Confirmation class

Library Assistant - Help out in the Library on Sunday mornings.

Retreats

Please fill out the attached Permission Slip and YMCA waiver for Friday, September 12!

The Junior High Fall retreat is one of the retreats to complete in the confirmation covenant. It is focused on living in community.

September 12-14, Friday-Sunday

Camp Ihduhapi, Loretto, MN

Please print out the attached Permission Slip and YMCA Camp Risk Waiver to be returned to Gena K. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Cost: $90.00

Departure: 6:00pm, Friday, September 12, the Southlot

Return: 12:30pm, Sunday, September 14, the Southlot

If you choose to find your own way to camp be sure you are dropped off Friday at 8:00pm and picked up Sunday by 10:00am!

  • Attached YMCA Risk Waiver filled out & Parental Permission slip filled out
  • 2-3 blankets or a sleeping bag
  • 2 sheets if using blankets, pillow, a towel/washcloth

  • hats for sun
  • 3-days worth of clothes (for indoor & outdoor use)
  • a jacket
  • 2 pairs of shoes (one that can get wet)
  • flashlight
  • water bottle
  • Bible & Lutheran Handbook
  • money for a fast food meal stop on the way there and snack money at camp (about $10 is pleanty)
PLEASE LEAVE ALL ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT (CD players/ipods, video games, etc) AT HOME. Any items that you bring, if they are lost, stolen or broken, you are responsible!
