Beth Warpmaeker: her favorites

Jean Westberg:

Walden by Henry David Thoreau. Descriptive writing style and his thoughts are as applicable today as they were over a century ago.

Gena Koeberl:

Children of God Go Bowling by Shannon Olson
Uprising by Dean Urdahl (both Minnesota authors)

Mandy Licklider Baseman:

Prozac Nation by Elizabeth Wurtzel
Animal, Vegetable, Mineral: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver
Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony that Shaped America by Russell Shorto

Ben Cieslik:

Preaching as Testimony by Anna Carter Florence (I heard her preach at the Festival of Homiletics in Minneapolis this spring, and I am really intrigued by what she has to say.)
When You are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris (Racy and raucous David Sedaris is one of a few authors that make me laugh out loud while reading. He finds hilarity in the ordinary.)

Chris Nelson:

The Soul of Money by Lynn Twist (a secular approach-with obvious applications to our faith-to connecting money and leading a fulfilling life.)
True North by Bill George (the retired CEO of Medtronic's discussion of true leadership.)

Lynnea Forness:

The Left Hand of God by Rabbi Michael Lerner
Deeply Woven Roots: Improving the Quality of Life in Your Community by Gary Gunderson

Maria Bucka:

The Waiting Father by Helmut Thielicke

Uncovered a gem of book.

Uncovered a gem of book. Saw a movie recently on TCM entitled BRIDGES TO THE SUN a true story of an American girl meeting and marrying a Japanese diplomat in early 1930's. She went to Japan with him during WWII. He was anti military and wanted peace and after the war was the personal liason between the Emperor and McArthur. i was facinated with the movie and just discovered the paperback book at my daughter's last week and it so brittle it kept slivering in my hands. the book was authored by Gwen Terasaki in 1957. The movie was a result of her memoir and the detailed living in Japan during the war deprivations and as an enemy of the Japanese.

Fun & light-hearted summer read

I just finished the book "Beware of Cat, and Other Encounters of a Letter Carrier" by Vincent Wyckoff. Vince is a letter carrier in South Minneapolis, who put together this collection of short stories about the people (and animals, Yea!) of his route. I thoroughly enjoyed every story, but especially loved the story of Cowboy...
